Job Description

Wilson & Company, Inc., Engineers & Architects, a national multi-disciplined engineering and architecture consulting firm, is currently seeking a full-time permanent Archaeologist and Cultural Resources Specialist to join our team in either our Albuquerque, NM or Phoenix, AZ offices. This individual will work with a team of environmental professionals from across the company to conduct environmental analyses and deliver quality documents supporting our federal, state, local and tribal clients under the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA), Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act, and other applicable federal and state regulations for environmental resource management.

This position will initially serve as a field team member throughout the southwest, including New Mexico, Arizona, Utah, and Texas. The team member will work with a field supervisor to conduct cultural resource inventories for a variety of federal, state, local and tribal clients. This position will assist with the management of field generated data including site forms, GIS files, photos, and artifact analysis forms. He or she will participate as a secondary author of inventory reports. Specific tasks will include completing field surveys, documenting archaeological and historic built environment resources, and supporting the preparation of larger NEPA documents. Strong writing skills are required and experience with GIS is preferred. Wilson & Company intends to provide experience and training for a motivated individual to progressively achieve a Field Supervisor position followed by Principal Investigator status. 

This position will also support task managers and NEPA Project Managers in successful execution of deliverables, which includes marketing, scope and fee developments, and management of task schedules and budgets. All Wilson & Company environmental staff work collaboratively with engineering professionals in a variety of disciplines across the firm to meet project goals in order to build relationships both locally and in all states where Wilson & Company is conducting work.

Essential Job Functions

  • Conduct field surveys consisting of 100% pedestrian surveys in accordance with Tribal, state, and professionally accepted archaeological protocols.
  • Coordinate with and support task and project managers for overall project performance and deliver projects to clients on schedule and on budget.
  • Travel throughout New Mexico, Arizona, and potential other out-of-state travel to support a national environmental program.
  • Complete archaeological forms and preliminary drafts of technical cultural resource reports.
  • Collaborate on the preparation of NEPA documents.
  • Work collaboratively and communicate effectively with engineering professionals in a variety of disciplines across Wilson & Company to meet project goals, and other key staff to build client relationships in New Mexico, Arizona, and other states where Wilson & Company is conducting environmental project work.

Required Skills

  • Bachelor of Arts (BA) or Bachelor of Science (BS) degree in archaeology or anthropology, historic preservation, architectural history, or related discipline. Advanced degrees will be given due attention.
  • Experience in the field, for example, survey and/or excavation.
  • Participation in an archaeological field school or 1.5 months of full-time archaeological excavation.
  • Familiarity of National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA), Section 106 regulations and state of New Mexico and/or Arizona cultural resource statutes.
  • Experience with GPS data collection technologies.
  • Task management skills with proven ability to complete work on schedule and within budget.
  • Ability to hike up to 10 miles per day while carrying field equipment, sometimes in difficult terrain and weather conditions.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Strong organizational and documentation skills with attention to detail.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications.

Required Experience

  • Master’s in in archaeology or anthropology, historic preservation, architectural history, or related discipline.
  • Experience working on various jurisdictions in New Mexico or Arizona, including Navajo Nation, Pueblo lands, BLM, USFS and State Land.
  • Experience with ESRI or similar software in collecting geospatial data and creating maps.
  • Permitted or permittable to conduct survey on New Mexico State Land, BLM, USFS, and Navajo Nation land.
  • Experience documenting the historic built environment.
  • Experience with assisting in the preparation of NEPA documents including desktop data collection, analysis, and technical writing.
  • Excellent technical writing skills.
  • Experience coordinating and consulting with regulatory agencies.

Hourly Range: $22.00 - $32.00
