On-Call Archaeological Field Technicians | Arizona

Job Description

Chronicle Heritage is seeking Archaeological Field Technicians to support our projects in Arizona. The role will assist the Field Director and Project Team in completing archaeological pedestrian surveys, field testing, site delineation and recording, and other field or office tasks. Preference will be given to local candidates. For camping projects, per diem will be provided; for hotel-based projects, per diem and lodging will be provided.

Hire Type: Hourly, as needed

Schedule: Availability to work full-time, as needed

Location: Field-based, Arizona

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in archaeology, anthropology, or a closely related field
  • Successful completion of an archaeology field school or have demonstrated equivalent experience
  • Ability to complete physically demanding tasks in remote areas and/or austere environments, including walking/hiking up to 10-miles per day, carrying loads up to 30 pounds, digging, and standing for long hours
  • Frequent out-of-town travel, potentially for extended periods of time
  • Valid driver’s license

Preferred Skills

  • Experience performing pedestrian surveys, excavating/recording shovel test units, and recording archaeological sites
  • Knowledge of Arizona material culture - Indigenous and Euro-American history and prehistory
  • Demonstrate excellent attention to detail, a positive work ethic, reliability, and commitment to working both independently and in a team environment
  • Previous experience with mapping equipment and other special application equipment (GPS, tablets, etc.)
  • Strong communication and organization skills

Senior Archaeologist/Project Manager | Arizona

Job Description

Chronicle Heritage is currently seeking a Senior Archaeologist to serve as a Principal Investigator or Project Manager based out of our Phoenix, Arizona office, with an option for partial remote work. The successful applicant will work alongside our existing Office Principals and other senior staff to successfully navigate a variety of federal, state, and municipal ordinances for our clients. The Senior Archaeologist will:

  • Lead technical studies and ensure clients receive high-quality, on-time deliverables
  • Oversee and coordinate with teams conducting both field and desktop research and impact analysis
  • Provide technical oversight and interdisciplinary team oversight
  • Provide quality control for all deliverables and ensure compliance with applicable regulations
  • Train and mentor staff and actively engage in professional development
  • Interface with clients and external stakeholders
  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of regulations affecting CRM and general industry trends
  • Demonstrate technical excellence in area of expertise and maintain knowledge of best management practices
  • Oversee field investigations of proposed project sites to assess or evaluate resources or the potential for resources
  • Direct collection, analysis, and interpretation of data; formulate recommendations and solutions to highly complex problems or those involving risk
  • Develop and maintain existing and new business relationships in collaboration with other senior staff and Office Principals
  • Strategically identify and pursue new leads, oversee the preparation of proposals, and procure project contracts

Required Qualifications

Advanced degree in archaeology, anthropology, or a closely related field 7+ years of experience preparing a variety of technical reports, including treatment plans and comprehensive data recovery reports

  • 5+ years of experience managing survey, testing, and data recovery projects of various sizes and complexity, including technical, project, or program management roles within an environmental, engineering, or cultural consulting firm
  • 2+ years of experience serving as a Project Manager or Principal Investigator on survey, testing, and data recovery projects
  • Expert knowledge of principles, practices, and techniques of CRM and relevant federal, state, and local laws and regulations
  • Knowledge of and experience in applying research methods and forming and maintaining effective client and interagency internal-team relationships
  • Ability to be permitted immediately as PI or PD on an Arizona Antiquities Act permit
  • Valid driver’s license

Job duties: 

Ambassador

  • Act as leader to field staff for best practices in inventory, evaluation, and mitigation/data recovery  
  • Increase technical skills in digitally drafting applications, various databases, and Field Maps and teach others technical skills
  • Produce documents that aid field staff, by creating SOPs, reference guides, and learning modules/series
  • Grow professional skillset in a variety of leadership skills: goal setting, delegation, decision making, communication, time management, problem solving, relationship building, team development
  • Field Director
  • Oversee and lead archaeological crews in all manner of fieldwork, including pedestrian surveys, testing/data recovery projects, and construction monitoring
  • Provide training to new staff, including field and laboratory staff
  • Complete office work, including technical writing related to pre- and post-field activities
  • Direct collection, analysis, and interpretation of data; formulate recommendations and solutions to highly complex problems or those involving risk
  • Work with PaleoWest Team Leads, Principal Investigators, Project Managers, and other staff to implement project-specific instructions and methods
  • Observe and uphold PaleoWest’s Fieldwork Procedures and Health and Safety requirements
  • Be willing to travel and stay overnight on short- and long-term projects

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Anthropology, Archaeology, or a closely related field 
  • One year of supervisory field experience
  • Two years of cultural resource experience within the region of potential employment
  • Valid Driver's License and reliable transportation 
Preferred: 
  • Previous field leadership experience (Crew Chief or Field Director) and a desire for advancement within the CRM industry
  • Master’s degree in Anthropology, Archaeology, or a closely related field
  • Demonstrable knowledge of the cultural resources and field methods within that region
  • Ability to take ownership of projects and overcome challenges with problem solving and critical thinking
  • Desire to provide mentorship to colleagues and improve field methods and systems
  • Willingness to travel
  • Willingness to relocate, if applicable
