On December 10th, the AAC sent a letter in support of the current archaeology programs at Pima Community College:

    Dear Chancellor Lambert,

Attached, please find a letter from the Arizona Archaeological Council expressing its support for the Centre for Archaeological Field Training and Field Archaeology Certificate Program at Pima Community College. We understand that the College is considering termination of the program, and we feel its loss will be a decisive blow to the growing and understaffed private sector archaeological consulting industry in Arizona. Please consider continuation of this vital program. You are welcome to contact me by telephone or email to discuss the AAC’s request.

    Cordially,

    Dan Garcia

    2021 President, Arizona Archaeological Council

Last year, the AZSITE Board appointed an Ad Hoc Advisory Committee to serve in place of the AZSITE Advisory Council until the Council becomes active and its seats are filled. The Ad Hoc Advisory Committee is comprised of a cross-section of AZSITE stakeholders. The purpose of the Committee is to advise the Board on matters of concern to AZSITE users and to assist with the improvement and development of the AZSITE platform as requested. There are currently three openings on the committee, for individuals representing:

    1.  State Agency (1 position)
    2. Federal Agency (1 position)
    3. Private Archaeological Consulting Firm – Small Business (1 position)

The Committee meets roughly once per quarter, but this can vary. If you are interested in one of the above positions, please complete the attached application and email to Dan Garcia. This application will also be made available on the Advisory Council area of our website.

Please follow up with Dan or myself with any questions. We appreciate your assistance in improving AZSITE.

    Thanks,

    Gabe McGowan, M.S.

Elizabeth Hora is the public archaeologist at the Utah State Historic Preservation Office. She runs the Utah Public Archaeologist Network, which brings together people and organizations to work together on projects to protect and preserve Utah's archaeology.  She recently wrote an article for a partnership with the Utah Office of Tourism called How to Visit Rock Imagery Sites Like an Archaeologist. The article gives people practical tips for how they can use "Visit with Respect" principles to not just protect archaeological sites for future generations, but really dive deep into experiencing the site for themselves.

The Arizona Archaeological and Historical Society (AAHS) is pleased to announce the 2021 competitive subvention award program for AAHS members. The purpose of this program is to provide money in support of the first publication of digital or print books or Kiva journal articles that further AAHS’s mission. Many sources of grant funding do not support publication costs. Through this program, AAHS can provide occasional funding to prevent this barrier to the sharing of research results. This year, awards up to $5,000 will be considered.

Please see the attached flyer for more information on the award criteria. Please share with your authors for whom this might be applicable.
